This years ‘War of the Roses’ between special schools from Yorkshire and Lancashire took place at Otley Sailing Club on Thursday 9th October. 16 teams from 8 Special Schools and Colleges competed for the trophy.

The racing was very competitive in winds blowing between 12 to 18 mph. Pendle Community High School who sail at Bolton Sailing Club won the first heat coming through the fleet after a bad start, with Holly Bank and John Jameson School coming 2nd and third. The second heat was dominated by two teams from Yorkshire. They battled against each other, changing places and the final position was only decided on the line.

The final produced the best racing of the day between the two Yorkshire team and the Bolton Sailors representing Pendle and Lancashire. From the start the three teams pulled clear of the rest and where together as started to beat back to complete the first of two laps. The decisive break at the very end of the lap when Daniel and Nicky from Pendle chose and excellent line and sailed clear of the competition, from that point the issue was decided and they came home to win by a 100 metres.

The event was excellently organised by Otley Sailing Club and their many volunteers. All the sailors received a ‘bag of goodies’, to recognise their achievements, provided by the RYA Sailability and Harken. Next year’s event will be held in October at Bolton Sailing Club.
