Three intrepid sailors, including one junior sailor, from Bolton Sailing Club set out for a weekend of fierce competition in the Midlands. They were competing in the Supernova Class, a fast single handed dinghy.
Light wind and shifty conditions greeted the field of 20 experienced and successful sailors who’d travelled for miles to compete at Coombs Sailing Club on the Saturday.
3 races were scheduled and in light of the tough competition, included a couple of previous National Competition winners, anyone could have won the overall prize….. but it was the Junior Alex Collins (17) who triumphed to claim overall victory coming first, closely followed by his fellow sailor and mentor Stuart Catterall securing 3rd place. Stuart quipped “I don’t mind taking Alex to competitions when his mum can’t make it ….. but next time I may forget his boat!” Don Appleton, also from Bolton – a veteran sailor over 70 years in age – claimed a creditable 15th position in a field which was not much more than half his age.
The next day at Carsington Sailing Club proved tough competition indeed with strong winds and gusty conditions testing the fitness of all the sailors with constant hiking out for the 3 races . Each race lasted about an hour and and the greater experience of Stuart saw him pip Alex to 3rd position overall, leaving the young sailor with a creditable 4th to add to his success of the previous day.
