As a quadriplegic with communication issues, finding a pastime or hobby that was both interesting and fulfilling was not easy. Sailing was something I never considered for different reasons, not just because of the obvious physical challenges but, for me at least, it had a slightly snobby image.
Nevertheless I was given the opportunity to go and see what it was all about and so I did. The reception my wife and I received was as warm as it was welcoming, it was clear immediately that any preconceived ideas that it would be a bit 'posh' were wrong. The team at Bolton Sailing Club are very down to earth, kind, helpful and extremely knowledgeable.
After being taken out a few times as a passenger and loving it, the calm and peacefulness, I was keen to investigate the chances of going out on the water alone. Paralysed from the neck down and unable to speak, it was a long-shot but I had to ask. Amazingly the challenge was accepted and unbelievably just a few weeks later on the final day of the season I was out on my own, controlling a boat myself with a very clever controller purposely made. The feeling was one I had almost given up on ever feeling again, I made the decision on where to go and how to get there, it was just me and that was awesome. Yes the safety boat was near and the boat adapted but I was in sole control of the craft and that in itself, particularly mentally is a fantastic tonic.
It has given me a new interest and purpose, it enables me to get out in the fresh air and I have met people who in themselves are inspirational and will be friends hopefully for years to come.
I can't speak highly enough of Sailability Bolton, A team of people who selflessly give up their time to make Sailability possible. Their knowledge and 'can do' mentally is the epitome of "there are no problems only solutions". The opportunities they make possible are amazing and I am only one of a few who can not wait for the new season to start.
