RYA North West Instructor Refresher Days
A series of evening sailing opportunities around the region to encourage our instructors to get together, go sailing in a variety of boats and boards (with informal tuition on offer) and network.
Eligibility: Minimum age 16 years.

Assistant Instructor
We need Assistant Instructors to support our Dinghy Instructors and Senior Instructors during training and coaching events at the club.
Assistant Instructor training can also be used as the first step on the ladder to becoming a qualified RYA Dinghy Instructor.
The course covers basic teaching principles, club procedures and specific training in any unfamiliar equipment (see RYA book G14).
Candidates will be assessed on their teaching ability with beginners.
After the course you will be qualified to teach up to RYA Dinghy Level 2 or RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Stage 3 under the supervision of a Senior Instructor.
As your AI training is limited to assisting qualified instructors and does not include first aid or powerboat handling, you will not be allowed to work without direct supervision of a Senior Instructor.
Validity: 5 years.
Assumed Knowledge: Competent, experienced sailor able to sail in strong winds.

Dinghy Instructor Pre-entry Assessment
Candidates should be able to complete tasks such as those listed below, sailing at all times with an awareness of the 'five essentials', and confirming they can sail in a controlled and confident manner, showing consideration for preparation, communication, approach and execution, at all times.
During the assessment the candidate will be asked to complete the following:
- Sail around a triangular course of 100m (minimum) legs to the best of their ability using all the boat’s normal equipment, including spinnaker if carried.
- Sail a tight circular course around a stationary boat, making only one tack and one gybe.
- Sail a ‘follow my leader’ course behind another boat. The course may include all points of sailing and may be behind another sailing dinghy or behind a powered boat.
- Pick up a man overboard dummy; the boat to be stopped and more than one attempt should not be needed.
The candidate may also be asked to complete some of the following:
- Sail without a rudder, or with the tiller on a loose elastic, around a triangular course. You will be expected to make good progress around the course in a seamanlike manner.
- Lee shore landing and departure.
- Anchor or pick up a mooring.
- Come alongside a moored boat.
- Recover a capsized dinghy and sail away.

Dinghy Instructor
Candidates will be required to demonstrate competence in course preparation, delivery and management, as well as customer liaison.
After the course you will be qualified to teach:
- RYA Dinghy Levels 1, 2 and 3.
- Day Sailing.
- Seamanship Skills.
- Sailing with Spinnakers (if suitably experienced and approved by the Principal or Chief Instructor).
- Youth Sailing Scheme: Stages 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Instructors are not assessed as competent in running a training centre, and should always work under the supervision of an RYA Senior instructor.
Validity: 5 years.

Racing Coach Level 2
The course covers the theory of coaching and applying it in a practical series of on the water exercises. Each candidate will be expected to run complete sessions including a brief, on the water exercises with feedback and a debrief. The aim of the course is to provide candidates with skills and techniques to coach racing to youth and adult sailors.
After qualifying you will have a broad basis of coaching skills and be able to deliver and award Start, Intermediate and Advanced Racing courses.
Validity: 5 years.
Assumed Knowledge: Appropriate current racing knowledge.
Eligibility: Good club racer with personal knowledge of club and/or regional racing.

Cancellation Policy
No place will be confirmed on courses held at Bolton Sailing Club until payment of the course fee has been received. 25% of all course fees are non-refundable if you drop out.
You understand that the Co-ordinator of an event held at Bolton Sailing Club may cancel or postpone the event at any stage in the case of bad weather, equipment failure or otherwise. Under such circumstances the event will either be re-arranged or the course fee refunded.
Risk Statement
It must be recognised that sailing and powerboating are by nature unpredictable sports and therefore inherently involve an element of risk. By taking part, you agree and acknowledge that:
- You are aware there is an inherent element of risk involved in watersports and you accept responsibility for exposing yourself to such inherent risk whilst taking part.
- You will comply at all times with the instructions of the instructor and/or skipper of the boat particularly with regard to instructions for boarding and leaving the boat and/or launching and recovery, using the equipment on the boat and handling sails, wearing of buoyancy aids, lifejackets and the wearing of suitable clothing in particular footwear for the conditions.
- You accept responsibility for any injury, damage or loss caused by your own negligence.
- You will not participate whilst your ability to take part is impaired by alcohol, drugs or whilst otherwise unfit to participate.
- You are aware that the provision of supervision by the instructors is limited to such assistance, as can be practically provided in the circumstances.
- You agree to abide by the Rules, Bylaws and Regulations of Bolton Sailing Club.
- You understand that insurance against personal accident and loss or damage to personal property is your responsibility.
