Peter Mackin of Bolton Sailing Club sailed at Abersoch Dinghy Week during 21-26 July.
Racing took place out of south Caernarvonshire Yacht Club where 200 to 300 boats regularly attend the event each year.
Peter sailed his RS300 “The Big Bang Theory” in the single-handed mixed fleet, in which he was by far the youngest.
Conditions were mixed during the week – ranged from light and little waves, to stormy, strong winds and very wavy. He is still very much learning the ropes, (literally)! represented by a number of capsizes on the very windy and wavy Thursday!
Peter finished the six races as follows; 5,5,4,4,18,4. 18th was a result of the stormy conditions on the Thursday during which he retired from racing due to the conditions proving far too challenging and presenting risk of unnecessary breakages.
Also in the mixed fleet were four other RS300’s all sailed by more experienced sailors. Considering it was Pete’s first time racing against other RS300’s he finished fourth overall in this specific fleet of 17. With respect to the RS300’s alone, Peter was third, the two just above him on the scoreboard finished in 3rd and 5th at 2012’s national championships.
Peter hopes that these results could lead on to future success in the RS300 fleet and is pleased with his performance in relation to the far older and more experienced sailors in the 300’s and the rest of the fleet.
He and a number of other Bolton sailors will move on to Bassenthwaite Regatta Week on Saturday 3rd August, where they will all hope to bring home trophies.
