10 sailors from Bolton set out for beautiful Cardigan Bay in Wales at the weekend to compete against 61 other sailors in the same dinghies at the 3 day Supernova National Championship Event.
Day 1 (Friday) 3 races were sailed in very testing sea sailing conditions and it was all about who could actually manage the gusty winds, very heavy surf and an increasingly strong tide – not something Bolton sailors experience much on picturesque Belmont reservoir. The final two days afloat provided glorious sailing in Cardigan Bay with a light breeze freshening to allow for the final races to be sailed in almost perfect sea sailing conditions and the closely fought Championship, where positions were constantly changing, was decided only on the final race of the 10 race series.
All 10 Bolton sailors completed the three days despite several of them never having sailed in the sea previously, incidences of almost catastrophic equipment failure and half the group taking up sailing only a few years before.
RESULTS:
- 5 Bolton sailors finished triumphantly in the top 11 (3rd Alex Collins, 7th Tony Critchley, 8th Peter Mackin, 10th Mike Critchley, 11th Andy Flitcroft)
- Junior Champion (Alex Collins)
- Silver Fleet winner (Peter Mackin)
- In addition, Bolton SC were winners of the coveted Team Trophy for the most points scored on aggregate throughout the weekend.
